Electrical Fire Shuts Down Heathrow Airport, Causing Flight Disruptions

Posted on May 6, 2025

London’s Heathrow Airport has been forced to shut down following a massive electrical fire that erupted late Thursday night. The blaze, which broke out at an electricity substation near the airport, caused a widespread power outage, leading to the cancellation and diversion of more than 1,350 flights worldwide.

Flight Cancellations and Diversions

Heathrow Airport, which handled a record-breaking 83.9 million passengers in 2023, is experiencing one of its worst disruptions in recent years. According to flight tracking service FlightRadar24, at least 120 flights were airborne when the closure was announced, forcing last-minute diversions to airports including Gatwick, Charles de Gaulle in Paris and Shannon in Ireland. Some long-haul flights returned to their departure points, adding further complications for travelers.

Fire Erupts Near Heathrow

Around 70 firefighters and 10 fire engines from the London Fire Brigade battled the flames in West London. According to Newsweek, witnesses reported seeing huge orange flames and plumes of black smoke lighting up the night sky before the fire was brought under control. The outage also disabled Heathrow’s backup power supply, leaving the airport inoperable.

UK Energy Secretary Ed Miliband stated that while the exact cause of the fire remains unknown, there is “no suggestion” of foul play. However, counterterrorism police are investigating as a precautionary measure.

Heathrow Airport issued a statement on X (formerly Twitter), confirming the closure until 23:59 GMT on March 21:

“Due to a fire at an electrical substation supplying the airport, Heathrow is experiencing a significant power outage. To maintain the safety of our passengers and colleagues, Heathrow will be closed until 23h59 on 21 March. Passengers are advised not to travel to the airport and should contact their airline for further information. We apologise for the inconvenience.”

Authorities Investigate

The London Fire Brigade has launched an investigation into the cause of the fire, alongside support from the Metropolitan Police. Meanwhile, Heathrow officials and airline operators are working to manage the fallout from the disruption.

As one of Europe’s primary aviation hubs, Heathrow’s shutdown is expected to have significant economic and logistical consequences in the days ahead. Passengers are urged to check with their airlines for rebooking options and further updates on flight schedules.
